School of Geology
School of Geology
Geology is important from many aspects such as petroleum industry, urban engineering, geological engineering, energy, hazards, water resources, climate change and so on. We are training outstanding students to be stewards of our earth's natural resources.
School of geology is one of the premier applied geoscience programs in Iran. With approximately 20 academic members and more than 300 students, the School is among the largest and most academically diverse in the Middle East.
Departments
School of geology comprises of three main departments with different academic disciplines:
- Hard rock geology (Economic Geology; Petrology);
- Soft rock geology (Sedimentology and Sedimentary petrology; Stratigraphy and Paleontology; Petroleum Geology);
- Structural and Engineering Geology.
Graduate and Postgraduate studies
School of geology admits students at Bachelor's, Master's and Doctorate levels. The Master's programs include majors in Petrology, Sedimentology and Sedimentary Petrology, Stratigraphy and Palaeontology, Petroleum geology, Economic Geology and Engineering Geology. PhD programs include majors in Petrology, Sedimentology and Sedimentary Petrology and Engineering Geology.
Researches
Our academic staff and students work in a number of areas important to earth, environment and engineering ranging from minerals and energy exploration to earth dynamics, to natural hazards and engineering properties of geo-materials. Some of the main current researches include:
- Engineering geological hazards in underground spaces;
- Underground storage of oil and gas;
- TBM performance estimation models;
- Estimating rock strength using indirect methods;
- Geochemical investigation of Permian-Triassic mass extinction in Persian Gulf;
- Reservoir quality evaluation of Permian-Triassic intervals in Persian Gulf;
- Sedimentary and reservoir characteristics of Kazhdumi and Dariyan formations in Persian Gulf;
- Comparison of the main metallogenesis of Himalaya-Zagross collisional orogenic system;
Laboratories
X-Ray diffraction Spectrometer (XRD); Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM); Atomic Absorption; Large compaction test; Uniaxial and Triaxial test for rock, Special abrasion apparatuses for estimating cutting tool wear; Indentation tests for estimating rock strength; Small single particle loading test; Drilling rate tests, Soil stickiness test, …
